The Working Bath

The baths were an important part of Roman life. With over 900 baths, public and private, Rome boasted a preoccupation with the bathing ritual, which consisted not only of the action of physically cleanliness, but also with the roman image of his body as a whole. Manner of presentation, amount of slaves, food, and clothes ones brings to the baths are the ultimate status signifier. The male and the female bodies are on display - cleaned, oiled, epilated, powdered, perfect - and need to be protected from the curse of the eyes of the admirer or envier. Therefore a large variety of shops get arranged around the baths, some housed inside the bathing Pavilions (PV), some around the Outside Court (OC) with the gardens.

The main procession of the baths is: entry, dressing rooms, Frigidarium (F),
Tepidarioum (T), Caldarium (C),Natatio (N) , Palestrae (P), dressing room. Multiple side rooms house the extra services of the baths.
