the column cladding project was conducted under
julieanna preston. the semester focussed on the use of ornament
in architecture and construction and how the making of the object
(machinery, maker skills, material, etc.) affects the level of
ornamentation and symbolism.
the piece is a critique on the skin as a cladding. normally when
a skin is designed in the utilitarian sphere (aka. columns, girders)
the element is hidden from view. the transparent nature of this
cladding highlights the most apealing feature of the column, its
crucifix cross-section, and adopts it as a prime design element.
a 3 axis cnc (computer numeric control) mill by axyz
was used to mill a 4x8 sheet of acrilyc into 126 parts. the mechanical
connectors and the radius of the milling bit are the only external
ornamentation allowed in the piece. |
